Yes - this is a blog entry!!!

Wow - I've been neglected the blog recently haven't I??!

Sorry about that - I've not just been idly sitting with my feet up eating fig rolls and watching dvd's (much!!!)

So what's been happening...

Saw The Angels - got to number 4 in the Amazon rock chart which was brilliant. Thanks to everyone who downloaded and support me and the song! x

Leicester gig - first time in Leicester and have to say, they do love their music. The Donkey is a hidden gem of a venue.

Echo Arena support gig - Supported the mighty Quo who were a lovely bunch of geezers. Great audience too (rock and roll is ageless don't you know).

Summer Pops headline show - brilliant. Pretty much sold out the Stanley Theatre in Liverpool. Loved it. First time accompanying myself on the piano for 'Does It Matter?'. New songs performed called 'Capricorn Beach' and 'Video Gods'. A landmark gig.

Songwriting - I'm constantly writing anyway but have enjoyed a good period of writing which you will hear the fruits of in the near future. Also did a spot of co-writing with Azadeh from new female vocal group Angels In White which was a new experience and a lot of fun.

Charity stuff - I abseiled the Liver Building for Claire House and am now a patron for new charity Music Heals (check out the link to their website on the news & tour page).

Holiday - short break in Anglesey. Never been before and enjoyed lolling about on the beach, diving into the water (The irish sea is cold!!), bbq's and general unwinding behavior. Back to work with a vengence now though!!

Other stuff - which will become apparent in the weeks to come (woooo - mysterious!)

That's it for now. Speak to you soon (I promise!!). More gigs on their way!!

Summertime / Rehearsals

Rehearsals start this weekend for the summer gigs ahead. With the new songs in the set, the confidence of having had a great summer of gigs last year and now with the Lightning Seeds tour under my belt, I get the feeling that these are going to be among the best gigs I've ever done - particularly my *Liverpool Summer Pops show @ Stanley Theatre at the end of July. So VERY excited at the moment.

Have had Janis Joplin's version of 'Summertime' in my head the last few days while I've been thinking about them. That and another song called 'Summertime' by The Sundays. Check them out. Puts you in the mood! :)

* Tickets are on sale now for the Stanley Theatre gig (30th July). Follow this link to get yours online now:

80's films

This year, I can't seem to get enough of 80's films. I've been ploughing through them at an alarming rate...

Films like... Sea of Love, Weekend at Bernies, St Elmo's Fire, Mannequin, Ruthless People - a lot of them with off the wall storylines and off the wall clothes - LOVE IT!

We should have the date soon along with ticket buying info!

New song demos / Sunshine!!!!

DEMOS

Thanks to everyone who has been in contact about the 'There Goes The Birth' demo. Since it's been available in the Audio section and on my facebook music page, we've had some great feedback. You'll be hearing it live at a gig soon!

There's now another demo of a new song in the Audio section and on facebook called 'The Walls Weaken'. Have a listen, see what you think.

It's always good to get reactions to new songs so don't be shy about emailing me @ info@stephenlangstaff.co.uk or adding me on facebook!

There's more on their way...

SUNSHINE

Like probably everyone in Britain at the moment  I'm enjoying the RETURN OF THE SUN! I love all the seasons. I love winter particularly and I enjoyed all the snow we had but it's good to now see the daffodils shoots starting to peek out of the ground and to now look at a pair of sunglasses and think "yes, you must be worn today".

I'm off to London in April to play @ The Bedford but for this month I'll still be working on new music and planning gigs for the summer months!

More info about gigs coming soon!

First 2010 Gig / London

Great first gig of the year on Friday. Such a good audience. I played the new songs I talked about in my last blog and they were received very well - like new arrivals at a party! I had the audience singing the "Will you wait for me?" refrain when I played Spires which was good to hear.

Just had news of another solo acoustic gig I'll be doing @ The Bedford in London on 14th April. A venue with a lot of history it seems for us singer/songwriter types. I've found that the difference between more intimate singer/songwriter-friendly venues (like Friday's venue) is that you actually get a decent chance to catch the other acts and absorb the atmosphere before going on stage which is a real bonus!

Widening The Scope!

I've been burrowing away like an eager rabbit on new music and plans for the year - but I thought I'd better check in on my blog!

The first gig of the year is coming up on Friday at the View Two Gallery in Liverpool and work on new music began at the start of January and hasn't stopped.

The new songs coming through are widening the scope of my songwriting. I think they're some of the best songs I've ever written. New songs titles include... Mary Rose, There Goes The Birth, Smile and All Good Americans.

I'll be debuting some of them at the acoustic gig on Friday. The gig has sold out and it'll be great to see how they're recieved!

If you have a ticket - see you there! x

Welcome to 2010!

I love the start of a year when new ideas are bubbling away and the months ahead are full of potential...

There's going to be a lot of great music and gigs coming from me and everyone who I'm working with so keep visiting the site and don't be a stranger! The first show is an intimate acoustic gig on Fri 26th Feb @ View2 Gallery, Liverpool!

At the end of 2009 I did an interview with a great bunch of people who run a website called www.bandinabox.tv

It was good fun and here's the end result. You might know me a bit better by the end of it.

2009 - END OF YEAR REVIEW!!

I want to look back at 2009. Looking at where you’ve been helps you see where you’re going.

The first thing I want to say is a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who has supported me and my music.

I’ve had a great year.

I’ve been all over the UK, doing my first real tour with on the Academy Live Tour in Autumn. I’ve ping-ponged back and forth between London and Liverpool, also visiting Cheltenham in the summer making my debut at the Greenbelt festival. Every new city I’ve played in has brought me and my songs closer to everyone. May that increase tenfold in 2010!!

In Liverpool this summer, I played the 2 biggest shows I’ve ever done. First was a prestigious support slot with The Lightning Seeds at the beautiful Philharmonic Hall. An amazing venue!  This was then topped only 5 days later when myself and the boys in the band walked onto the stage at the Echo Arena to play for 6000 people, supporting Deacon Blue!! The response was fantastic. What a night that was and such valuable experience for me!!  It’s amazing how comfortable it feels to perform in front of that many people!! Electrifying!

Some of the moments I’ve had onstage this year have been the best in my career so far. I can tell already that next year will take things to another level!!

In the studio, I’ve written and recorded 2 EP’s – When All Is Said and Acoustic EP.  The Acoustic EP was recorded in Leeds and I’ll never forget recording the song ‘Does It Matter?’. The lights were moody in the studio, Ged Allen was on piano and I was at the microphone. We recorded the piano and vocal live. I LOVED this way of recording (old school!). A special moment – you can hear the atmosphere on the recording.

There are brand new songs that have come to me in the last part of this year which no one has heard yet – but you will be hearing them in 2010!!

2009 has also seen the birth of the first official ‘Stephen Langstaff’ T Shirts - complete with song slogans and my personal ‘arrow and circle’ symbol (which I finally had tattooed on my left wrist this year – after months and months of saying I would!). I remember looking out at the packed crowd on the Liverpool leg of the Academy Live Tour and seeing people proudly wearing the words ‘Here Come The Sunbeams’ and ‘I Saw The Angels’. Another special moment.

So another year comes to an end and we have Christmas with all the colour and presents and food!! A time to switch off and relax with friends and family.

That’s what I’m going to do now.

See you at a gig in the New Year and thanks once again for sharing the musical adventures with me in 2009!!!!!!

Lots of love and Happy Christmas

Yule Blog

Christmas is here! The Yuletide is upon us.

I've been having a little break from gigging and have been working on new songs and making plans and projects for next year. If there's no blog entry on here, rest assured I'm still a borderline-workaholic singer/songwriter so am always getting up to something!

I filmed an interview for a new musicians website the other day too - that'll be available on the web before the end of the year so I'll post it up here!

I've also been enjoying the run-up to Christmas and indulging in my favourite festive habits: Mulled Wine, Christmas Markets, Present Shopping, Wine Driinking, Cheese-Eating, Mince Pie Eating, Film Watching, etc. etc. etc!

I went to watch a stage performance of 'A Christmas Carol' the other day. What an amazing story - and what an imagination Charles Dickens had. I read the book a few years ago and hugely recommend it to anyone. It's a shory story but so simple and powerful - my favourite kind of art!

My favourite line from a Christmas story though is still this one from Miracle on 34th Street (the Richard Attenborough version!). Father Christmas says to someone:

"If you refuse to accept anything on faith alone you doom yourself to a life dominated by doubt"

Well said. Ho ho ho.

Autumn

"Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness...." ('To Autumn')

I read John Keats a few years ago and I always think of that poem this time of year!

I love Autumn. Really inspiring time as the season changes dramatically from the buzz of summer into calm moodiness. There's something magical about Autumn that I can't help but love. With this inspiration I've been working on new songs as well as doing a bit of life stuff. It's been such a hectic summer, it's good to change gear. I can't wait to hear what impact the events of this year might have on my writing. We'll wait and see...

Anyway, on with Autumn... dead leaves, dark and cosy nights, Halloween, Bonfire night and then Christmas - I'm looking forward to all of them (yes I AM a big kid at heart!!)

Inexcess tv spot

Last week I had a phone call to appear on internet Tv show Inexcess. I've done it before and enjoyed it. I decided to do 'Second Chances' to end the show. This song was on 'Armour' my 2nd home-produced album (in the days before I had a full band to play with me!!) and I haven't played it for a long time so it was great to give it an airing.

Here's the clip:

Birmingham and London (Academy tour diary)

The Academy Live tour ended on Thursday and here's some moments in my head from the final 2 days:

* Listening to Tori Amos albums with Steve en route to Birmingham (vid clip below)

* Excited to be playing Birmingham for the first time (a really good city!)

* Visiting guitar shop in Birmingham and drooling over some guitars.

* Getting crowd clapping to the 'drum section' in My Little Fortune.

* Buzzing onstage in Birmingham - doing my thing, moving and twisting on a very cramped stage!

* Being told I look like Gary Kemp from Spandau ballet by someone buying my album in Birmingham

* Watching bits of 'Watchmen' and 'Twilight' on Nick's iPod in the van on way to London.

* Trying a Thai Omlette in London restaurant (not bad)

* Great reactions from London crowd - particularly on My Little Fortune and Confide In Me (I LOVE people in the crowd who aren't afraid to dance!!!)

* Catching up with Rick and Tine after the show. Rick is the German chap who has become a legend this year for getting the Stephen Langstaff 'Arrow and Circle' symbol tattooed onto his wrist - before I even had it!!

* Bumper to bumper for over an hour and a half on M1 on way home from London (knackering but quite funny).

* Watching Ged try and walk in a straight line coming home from London (it was the last night and alcohol was involved!).

* LOVING the experience of touring and ending in London

* Eating a lot of apples and cashew nuts over both days for some reason!

* Being proud of everyone involved who helped make the tour what it was: Everyone who came to the shows, Steve Burkert, Nick Sidor, Ged Allen, Gary Warrington, Jay Phoenix, Laura Warrington, Mike and Alex, Claire Macleod and Academy Events, Viva City, The Dukes Jetty, Murray James.

Newcastle and Liverpool (Academy tour diary!)

I'm LOVING the Academy Live tour. I was in Newcastle on Monday and played solo, met some great people and won some new listeners over!! Great to play some of the new songs from the EP. Brilliant city. We got some pictures of the Angel of The North (not a surprise considering my love of Angels!!!). I'll post a few up here soon!

The Liverpool show last night was amazing - such a good audience and a great atmosphere!!! The new T-SHIRTS were onsale for the first time and it was lovely to see them being worn in the crowd. And the new 'Acoustic EP' made it's debut on the merchadise stall too with a great response! I had the audience singing on 'Does It Matter?' and that was a VERY special moment for me. I dedicated it to my Grandad who passed away recently and I know he'd have been smiling at everyone singing that song to him!!

I've never had a better Tuesday night in my life!! haha.

Thank you so much to everyone who was there and I'll see you next time.

Birmingham tonight. Can't wait. Another great city - BRING IT ON.

Academy Tour - Newcastle tonight!

The first night of the Academy Tour Starts tonight in Newcastle.

I've never played Newcastle before and am VERY excited!!!

It's a great city and I'm told amazing for music lovers. I grew up watching Auf Whedersein Pet videos at home and keep getting quotes from it popping into my head for some reason!! haha

I'm on at 7:30pm, playing solo and will so will be kicking the tour off.

I'm with the band every other night of the tour - it's going to be a good week.

Busting Some Moves

I was in a bar in Liverpool last Friday night and requested a song from the DJ. He came back over to me ten minutes later and said "I saw you at the Echo Arena a few weeks ago, have you got any CD's?". Luckily I did (someone out on the night had asked me to bring a couple of albums) and over the next couple of hours I danced and watched others dance to 'Saw The Angels', 'Opposite Walls' and 'Let's See Your Armour'.

Writing songs at the top of the stairs..

I've finished some new songs recently. Very happy with them.

It's funny where and when you end up writing sometimes. I was just about to go out to a party and I sat at the top of the stairs with my guitar 30 mins before I left. All of a sudden the finished version of a song I've been working on for a few weeks came together and that was that! I took my guitar with me to the party and played it to everyone towards the end (early hours of the morning) in the garden :)

Festival Weekend

Last weekend I played the Greenblet festival for the first time - fantastic. Everyone so friendly and the audience so warm and up for a good time! Great to get down to that part of the UK and give them a taste of my music. I also had my first taste of Spanish 'Churros' from a food stand after the gig - sort of like vertical doughnuts which you spinkle in cinnamon and then dip into hot chocolate sauce! Amazing.

Then there was the Matthew St Festival in Liverpool and 2 gigs over the Sunday and Monday - both raucous!

Playing festivals feel a bit like turning up at someone's party and playing.

Sad to see the end of the summer and the end of festival season - but I'm a lover of Autumn and I can't wait for the leaves to start dropping now!

See you soon

Poem (For my best friend's cat)

In Memory of little 'Buffy'

Tiny tiger

Gold in your bones

Crying every time I pick you up

Black paws

A daughter's presence

Crying every time I pick you up

Ancient markings

10 months old

Crying every time I pick you up

Tiny bites

Tiny nose

Crying every time I pick you

Laughing at your Kangaroo legs

Crying every time I pick you up

Climbing fences

Catching insects

Crying ever time I pick you up

Little eyes

Young and loving

Crying every time I pick you up

Unseen danger

Unforgiving

Crying every time I pick you up

Finding you

Without your spirit

Crying every time I pick you up

Tiny tiger

Gold in your bones

Crying every time I pick you up

Black paws

A daughter's absence

Crying every time I pick you up

Warmth and sadness

Friends forever

Crying ever time I pick you up

I keep my memories together

Smiling every time I pick you up

What's On The Horizon?

On the horizon is.... a guest spot at Liverpool's Studio 2 bar which I've been asked to do tomorrow night. It's a converted Recording studio from the famous Parr St Studios and a cool place to be. I think I'll be onstage from 9:30pm and for a long time with Steve (drums) and Ged (Piano) so I can't wait to do that. Being onstage seems like marathon running to me sometimes (not that I've ever ran a marathon!), where the longer you go the more relaxed and focused you get!

Next will be my debut appearance at The Greenbelt Festival in Cheltenham. I didn't realise that the festival has been going for decades. Festival audiences are amazing - constantly up for good music and a good time! I'll be on at 6pm on the Underground Stage. The drive to a festival is always a laugh too - I like to be out there!

After that will be appearances at Liverpool's Bank Holiday Weekend Matthew St Festival. I'm due to appear acoustically at the new and uber-cool music venue Badformat on the Sunday (30th Aug) and also put in an appearance at the Zanzibar on the Monday (31st Aug). It's amazing how the festival has grown. Fingers crossed the sun comes out to play!

After that will be the Academy Live Tour at the end of September - I'll write a separate blog entry about that because I'm VERY VERY excited about it!!!!

See you soon

On The Way Home From London...

Just thought I'd post a quick blog while I wait to set off back home to Liverpool after a fantastic gig in London last night. I did an acoustic gig at the famous 'Halfmoon' venue in Putney. I think it was one of the best solo performances I've ever done to date. I've played there a few times and the unplugged night there is special. You can always hear a pin drop while every act is on. There are vids in the VIDEO section of the site from when I played there earlier this year - you'll see what I mean!

There's something about playing to a room full of people intently listening and sat at tables with candles that spurs you and brings out the Romantic in you!! It's so easy to open up and I love these gigs because it feels like you get so close to the audience you might as well be sitting in someone living room and playing at a party of friends.

Music is a powerful force for uniting people and that become very clear on nights like last night. I'm privileged to be the one delivering the music.

See you all soon!

Philharmonic Hall, Recording in Leeds & Liverpool Echo Arena in 5 days

What a week I had last week.

First was the Philharmonic Hall gig with The Lightning Seeds. An unforgettable experience. The sound system and acoustics at that venue are a thing of wonder! I sang the first line of 'Saw The Angels' at the start of the set and it felt like my voice was twenty times bigger. Absoultely loved it. The audience reaction was fantastic and I met a lot of great people upstairs at the merchadise counter where I was signing albums.

BIG THANKS AND LOTS OF LOVE TO EVERYONE WHO CAME TO IT!!!!

The day after the Phil gig I went to Leeds for a few days to finish recording the new EP which will be available very soon!!! Great to get back into the studio and good fun staying in a classic British B&B while we were there - complete with a VERY tiny bathroom and 1980's wallpaper!

On our last day in Leeds tehre came a phone call asking would I and the band like to support Deacon Blue at the Liverpool Echo Arena on the Friday coming!! Amazing opportunity and what a night it turned out to be - performing to nearly 6000 people!!

The buzz from performing to that many people was incredible. It's a special feeling seeing the lights go down and hearing an audience that big cheer as you walk on. The songs were really well received by the audience. Once again a lot of people were at the merchadise counter afterwards buying the album and chatting away. I loved the whole thing. I was a fan of Deacon Blue anyway and after meeting them and realising how cool and friendly they are as people my respect doubled.

All in all a good week at the office!!

Stephen

P.S. I'm not the biggest technology wizz but I've worked out how to upload stuff from my phone. Here's a pic from the Philharmonic gig and a vid of a breathtaking backstage one-man jig that took place in the dressing room after the show :)

More little vid clips from the studio and hanging around Echo Arena to follow!!!

Zanzibar, Hollyoaks & Seeds

Acoustic Zanzibar show last night went well. Thanks to everyone who came out to it!

It's great to do acoustic gigs because I feel like I'm able to chat a bit more to the audience onstage, proved by my talking about watching the Mersey River one day and getting inspired to write a song as well as walking home for miles one day singing a melody over and over so I wouldn't forget it - but getting funny looks off people and cars that went past me singing as I walked!

Also met a girl who is in Hollyoaks called Zoe after the show. I think that's her real name as well as her name in the show. I don't actually watch it (no offence to Hollyoaks fans intended!) but she seemed really nice and went home with an album. You never know I might get a cameo in the future as a busker :)

The highlight of the entire night for me was hearing everyone in the audience singing the chorus of 'Saw The Angels' back at me. If I could bottle the feeling of hearing everyone singing my song to me so joyously I'd never drink alcohol again.

p.s. I texted my mate today to tell him and he reminded me of when, aged 14, we saw The Lightning Seeds headline the Hillsborough Justice Concert at Anfield Stadium. If you'd have told me then as a 14 year old with an 'oasis' hairstyle watching and wanting to be up there that'd I'd one day be sharing a stage with them I'd have been a happy chap. The moral of the story? Anything is possible.

New Recordings

Me and the band are off to Leeds for a couple of days this month to do some recording. We've been playing a lot of new songs live in the last few months and so it'll be good to get a couple down. Every time I go into the studio I get a buzz because I know that I, the band and the songs have moved on since the last time in the studio. It's all about trying to capture moments and I love that. 'Spires' will be one of the songs getting recorded (There's a vid clip of a live performance of that song in the VIDEO section - have a listen), which is a special song to me. The imagery paints a mysterious little gothic story in my head - 2 people meeting outside a church ("by the spires") at night. Why are they meeting there? I can't wait to record that one.

See you all soon - the Liverpool acoustic show at Zanzibar I presume!

Sunbeams in England / Angels in Africa

Did some quality rehearing this weekend preparing for the upcoming headline acoustic show @ Zanzibar in Liverpool (Sat 18th July!). Everyone's really up for it!!!

I'm LOVING the sunny days we're getting right now in England. I was helping in my friends garden yesterday and had to suppress an overwhelming urge to start a water fight with him. I didn't (thankfully).

With all the sun and good vibes going on new songs are starting to emerge like new seeds taking root!

Last but not least...check out these pics showing the lyrics to Saw The Angels coming to life. The 3rd verse of the song says "I went to Africa and I saw the angels" (have a listen to it in the audio section of the site!). Here is that lyric brought to life - brilliant! Thanks to Gary and Laura Warrington for the pics!

Roll on the 18th July!!!

See you all soon

Zanzibar Acoustic Show

I'm headlining at 'The Songbook Sessions' clubnight at the Zanzibar Club in Liverpool in a few weeks (Sat 18th Aug). Can't wait for that one. I've always liked that venue and played there a lot when before I had the band with me. The sound is great and it has the feel of a place that's got real history. Noel Gallagher, The Zutons, The Coral, Kooks, The Libertines have all been on that stage.

I'll be doing a stripped down set including some new songs I'm really excited about. Steve the drummer ('drumming beast of the North West' as someone on his myspace described him recently. I wouldn't disagree!) will be onstage with me to create the magic.

It's going to be a special night.

Advanced tickets are available now for £4 - just email info@stephenlangstaff.co.uk to request yours.

Tickets are also available online at Ticketline:

Old Guy and The Red Rose

This week I saw an old guy riding a bicycle with a single red rose tied to the back of it. I'd love to know where he was going with it....

Welcome to the website...welcome to my blog

So here we are in my new website. I hope you like it.

I wanted to have a website that was somewhere you can keep coming back to for info and interest, somewhere that gives you regular updates and keeps you entertained. So that's what you'll be getting!

I'm going to write a regular blog on this page with info about gigs, reports about new songs and upcoming events, pics, little vid clips (once I've worked out how to upload them properly!!), thoughts, gossip and anything else that pops into my head to put up here.

I've never kept a diary before so writing this blog will be the closest I've ever come to that!

So keep watching. Stephen. x
